An interview with HOYA Vision Care’s Global Experts

At the 40th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress, HOYA Vision Care reaffirmed its commitment to combating childhood myopia and enhancing eye health across the region. As a leading innovator in optical technology, HOYA is driving awareness, research, and evidence-based interventions to address the growing burden of vision disorders, particularly in Asia.

In this exclusive interview, The Indian Optician (TIO) speaks with Dr Natalia Vlasak, Global Head of Medical and Scientific Affairs at HOYA Vision Care, and P Ramachandran (PR), Consultant for HOYA Vision Care South Asia and Fellow Institute of Directors (IOD). Together, they discuss HOYA’s role at APAO 2025, the science behind MiYOSMART spectacle lenses, their strategies for engaging eye care professionals (ECPs), and the company’s long-term vision for accessible, effective myopia management across India and beyond. Following are excerpts of the interview:

DR NATALIA VLASAK GLOBAL
HEAD OF MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC AFFAIRS
HOYA VISION CARE

The Indian Optician (TIO): HOYA Vision Care was one of the main sponsors of the 40th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress. Why is the APAO Congress an important platform for HOYA?

Dr Natalia Vlasak (NV): APAO serves as a high-profile meeting of leading ophthalmologists and experts in the Asia-Pacific region, an area facing a growing burden of eye disease. This provides an invaluable opportunity for HOYA Vision Care to both showcase the results of our clinical studies in myopia management and learn about the latest ophthalmic innovations and research in the region.

P Ramachandran (PR): The fact that India, a country with a substantial and growing population affected by myopia and other eye conditions, hosted the congress this year highlights the critical importance of specialised vision care in the Asia-Pacific region. The number of ophthalmologists in India is projected at 24,000 and more than 50% of them registered for this event, representing a key opportunity for HOYA Lens India.

TIO: That is really a significant participation from Indian ophthalmologists. How does HOYA Vision Care plan to contribute to the advancement of ophthalmic care in India and the broader Asia-Pacific region?

PR: We are dedicated to advancing ophthalmic care in India and across the broader Asia-Pacific region through both innovation and on-the-ground action. HOYA Lens India in the past, has conducted conducted a vision screening campaign for commercial vehicle drivers, partnering with the India Vision Institute (IVI), the Indian Optometric Association (IOA) and All India Optical Federation (AIOF), to provide them with vision check-ups and spectacles. This work is a key contributor towards our pledge to the World Health Organization (WHO) SPECS2030 program, increasing access to quality refractive services globally.

We also participated in and supported the IVI initiative, in collaboration with the Delhi Council for Child Welfare, to benefit 5,000 girl children across Delhi and the NCR through eye screenings and the provision of spectacles.

P RAMACHANDRAN (PR), CONSULTANT FOR HOYA VISION CARE SOUTH ASIA AND FELLOW INSTITUTE OF DIRECTORS (IOD)

NV: The Asia-Pacific region is of great importance to HOYA from a public health perspective, especially accounting for shifting global population dynamics. By 2050, an estimated five billion people – roughly half the global population – could be affected by short-sightedness, many of whom are in this part of the world. We recognise the specific need of children in this region, too: some studies project a significant rise in myopia prevalence among urban Indian children, potentially reaching ~50% by 2050 – driving our mission to advancing ophthalmic care for everyone.

TIO: HOYA Vision Care’s MiYOSMART  spectacle lenses have gained recognition for helping to manage myopia progression in children. What are the key features of these lenses, and how do they accommodate older children and teenagers?

NV: MiYOSMART* spectacle lenses utilise Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology as their key feature. They have a central clear area surrounded by numerous tiny defocus segments.  Each segment refracts light slightly differently from the main part of the lens, creating myopic defocus where peripheral light focuses in front of the retina. This unique optical signal prompts the eye to slow down its elongation, which is the main driver of myopia

This unique optical signal prompts the eye to slow down its elongation, which is the main driver of myopiaprogression in children. Clinical studies show sustained slowing of myopia progression and axial elongation, and in some cases, even halting them.

TIO: Myopia in children is a growing concern. How is HOYA Vision Care educating parents about the importance of early intervention and the role MiYOSMART spectacle lenses can play in controlling myopia progression?

NV: Addressing myopia early is vital for preventing significant vision issues in adulthood and reducing the risk of serious long-term eye complications. Increasing awareness of the early signs of myopia in young children among parents and teachers is crucial for timely detection. That’s why HOYA Vision Care is a strong advocate for working with governments, local ministry of health and education and policymakers to ensure parents and teachers have access to education on vision health. We work to prioritise myopia awareness among policymakers, emphasising the need to reach parents through multiple channels.

PR: HOYA Vision Care has joined hands with various associations in creating awareness among school-aged children. We have developed educational cartoon videos in multiple languages, emphasising the utmost importance of sunlight exposure, regular eye check-ups and less gadget time.

TIO: HOYA Vision Care has recently extended the power range of the MiYOSMART spectacle lenses. How will this benefit children with high myopia and astigmatism?

NV: While early intervention is critical due to rapid progression in younger children, every dioptre matters: the recent extension of the MiYOSMART spectacle lens power range extends its  benefit to children with high myopia and astigmatism. By offering a broader spectrum of negative powers, up to -13.00 diopters, and cylindrical powers up to 4.00 dioptres, MiYOSMART can help manage myopia progression in more children with higher prescriptions and those with accompanying astigmatism.

TIO: HOYA Vision Care recently presented findings from a clinical study conducted in Hong Kong on MiYOSMART spectacle lenses. What were the key findings of the 8-year follow-up clinical study on these lenses?

NV: The recent 8-year follow-up clinical study on MiYOSMART spectacle lenses, the longest study of its kind, provides valuable long-term evidence on their effectiveness and patient experience. Key findings indicate that 60% of patients in DIMS group continued to wear MiYOSMART spectacle lenses for up to 8 years, demonstrating sustained user satisfaction and improved awareness of myopia management.  Importantly, the study confirmed a statistically significant reduction in axial elongation  over this period in patients wearing MiYOSMART spectacle lenses compared to those who switched to single vision spectacle lenses in the last two years. These findings reinforce the robust evidence base supporting MiYOSMART spectacle lenses as an effective and well-tolerated solution for managing myopia progression in children.

TIO: HOYA Vision Care has been committed to evidence-based myopia management, particularly through the Confidence through Evidence campaign. Can you elaborate on how this campaign supports Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) in their practice?

NV: HOYA Vision Care’s “Confidence through Evidence” campaign empowers ECPs to confidently recommend and prescribe MiYOSMART spectacle lenses by highlighting a strong foundation of over 90 peer-reviewed publications that validate their effectiveness and  safety as a leading solution for myopia management.

TIO: How does HOYA Vision Care engage with ECPs to ensure they are equipped with the latest research and evidence to manage childhood myopia progression effectively in their practices?

NV: In India, we engage with ECPs to enhance their awareness and understanding of myopia through continuous education initiatives via our dedicated educational platform. By fostering public-private partnerships, we’ve developed research-based protocols that empower ECPs to intervene early and effectively. Our collaborative approach extends to partnerships with health organisations, educational institutions, universities, and research centres, as well as directly with ECPs.

PR: This can be seen through our work with leading global organisations such as the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and Orbis International, a leading non-profit dedicated to preventing and treating blindness. Most recently, we launched a three-year partnership with Orbis UK to fund a vital Vision Centre in India. This centre aims to increase access to primary eye care services, including digital screenings, diagnosis and treatments for a range of eye conditions. On a global scale we are also actively contributing to initiatives such as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) SPECS 2030; we’re committed to expanding refractive error coverage by 40% by 2030 ensuring universal access to affordable eye care.

NV: This collaborative approach allows us to gather valuable insights and learnings, which we then apply to highlight key issues and develop relevant training and resources for the field of myopia management.

TIO: What feedback have you received from ECPs regarding the effectiveness and ease of incorporating MiYOSMART into their practice?

NV:  Testimonials highlight MiYOSMART’s ease of dispensing, high patient tolerance, and its ability to provide a spectacle lens solution for myopia management. A significant number of patients continue to use MiYOSMART spectacle lenses for extended periods, suggesting user satisfaction and tolerance. These positive patient experiences directly enhance ECPs’ confidence in recommending these lenses.

PR: The strong results shown with MiYOSMART in clinical studies has increased confidence in this solution among prescribers, and it’s now the preferred first-line treatment solution by many ECPs for myopia management.

TIO: With myopia becoming a global issue, particularly among children, how does HOYA Vision Care plan to address the challenges of managing myopia progression in diverse ethnicities and geographical areas?

NV: We are addressing the global challenge of managing myopia progression through research, extending studies beyond East Asia to include regions like Europe. For instance, the 2-year results of a UK observational study demonstrate MiYOSMART effectiveness in European eyes that is similar to Asian findings. This commitment to studying different ethnicities helps ensure the solution is broadly applicable.

TIO: How do HOYA Vision Care’s new VisuPro advanced focus spectacle lenses address the needs of young presbyopes, including both existing spectacle wearers and non-wearers?

NV: Our VisuPro advanced focus spectacle lenses are specifically designed for individuals in their late 30s to mid-40s experiencing the initial signs of presbyopia. Often busy multi-taskers balancing careers, family, and numerous responsibilities, these individuals can benefit from VisuPro All Day, which offers clear vision at all distances, leveraging Binocular Harmonization Technology (BHT) for comfortable and effortless focus.

TIO: How does BHT improve visual comfort and reduce eye strain for young presbyopes using digital devices?

NV: HOYA Vision Care’s BHT analyses the individual right and left eye prescriptions to calculate the required binocular design and align the prescription. This precise calculation in VisuPro lenses helps ensure effortless focusing, stability, and depth of vision, which is crucial when shifting focus between digital screens and the surrounding environment. The lens design also includes enhanced near vision support to reduce the strain associated with desk work and digital device use.

TIO: Given that MiYOSMART is not yet approved for use in all countries, how do you plan to expand its availability worldwide, and what challenges do you face in this process?

NV: We are actively working to expand the worldwide availability of MiYOSMART spectacle lenses, recognising the increasing global concern of childhood myopia. We are engaging with the regulatory bodies in each country to gain the necessary approvals for its use in myopia management.

PR: With childhood myopia on the rise in India, it’s a top priority to ensure more children across the country have better access to eye care. MiYOSMART spectacle lenses are now available through a growing network of authorised ECPs. Parents seeking MiYOSMART for their children can find participating practices through a practice locator on the HOYA Vision Care website (https://www.hoyavision.com/find-optician/).

TIO: What are HOYA’s next steps for advancing myopia management? Are there any upcoming studies or innovations in the pipeline that you are particularly excited about?

NV: HOYA Vision Care is committed to continuous advancement in myopia management through ongoing research, development, and strategic initiatives. In addition to our leading 8-year clinical evidence in MiYOSMART from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, we also presented new evidence for personalising myopia treatment by combining low-dose atropine drops with these lenses in European children. We continue to invest in research and development and build upon the strong foundation of evidence and continue to engage in education and awareness initiatives to combat the growing global challenge of myopia progression in children.

Product disclaimer: *MiYOSMART spectacle lenses have not been approved for myopia management in all countries, including the United States, and are not currently available for sale in all countries.
